Cycling Rockhampton and Yeppoon

Cycling in the Rockhampton region offers urban paths, rural road riding, and coastal routes that provide exercise and a different perspective compared to driving. The flat to gently undulating terrain suits recreational cyclists, while the road between Rockhampton and Yeppoon challenges experienced road riders.

Rockhampton City Cycling

Rockhampton has shared paths and cycling routes, with the riverside paths along the Fitzroy River providing the most pleasant riding. The path runs along the southern bank with river views and connects to the CBD. Kershaw Gardens and surrounding parkland in North Rockhampton offer off-road cycling paths suitable for families and mountain bike practice.

Rockhampton to Yeppoon

The road from Rockhampton to Yeppoon is approximately 40 kilometres and is ridden regularly by road cycling groups. The road is well-maintained with reasonable shoulder width, though it carries regular traffic including trucks. The route is mostly flat with gentle climbing, completable by experienced road cyclists in under two hours. Ride in the early morning to avoid traffic and heat.

Yeppoon Coastal Riding

The Yeppoon foreshore and esplanade provide pleasant riding along the coast, with the path extending from the town centre past the lagoon and along the beachfront. The route between Yeppoon and Emu Park follows the coast through scenic headland country and provides a longer ride of approximately 20 kilometres each way with some climbing on the headland sections. Views across the Keppel Islands from the high points are outstanding.

Practical Considerations

Hydration is critical when cycling in Rockhampton's climate. Carry more water than you think you need and plan your route around refill points. Early morning rides avoid the worst of the heat and the heaviest traffic. Wear sunscreen and a helmet, both of which are non-negotiable in Queensland. Road surfaces are generally good but watch for debris on road shoulders, particularly after storms. If hiring a bike, options are limited in Rockhampton compared to capital cities, so confirm availability before planning a cycling-focused itinerary.
