Carnival weekends in Rocky —
where teams and families stay.
Rockhampton hosts state and regional carnivals across rugby league, cricket, athletics, swimming and more — and carnival weekends fill the city. Cityville’s 2- and 3-bedroom apartments with full kitchens, the pool and the BBQ area suit teams and families: self-cater, debrief by the pool, and be inside a 6-minute drive or 20-minute walk of every major Rockhampton venue.
Venue drive and walk times
- Victoria Park sports precinct — 0.7 km / 2 min drive (9 min walk).
- Rockhampton Showgrounds — 1.0 km / 3 min drive (12 min walk). Major regional fixtures, athletics, equestrian.
- Browne Park (Capras rugby league) — 1.4 km / 3 min drive (17 min walk).
- Callaghan Park racecourse — 2.9 km / 6 min drive.
Every major Rockhampton carnival venue sits inside a comfortable walk on a cool morning or a 6-minute drive. For a rep weekend across two venues, you’re not losing forty minutes a day to transit. Full measured table on our Location page.
Why apartments beat motel rooms for teams
For carnival travel with a team or family group, the apartment-vs-motel call usually comes down to four things:
- Cost per head. A 3-bedroom apartment for six players across three rooms typically lands below six separate motel rooms.
- Self-catering. A full kitchen means a team breakfast at carnival start times, lunch packed from the fridge, dinner cooked one or two nights, dietaries managed in-house.
- Laundry. The 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom apartments include in-room laundry — uniform turnaround during a multi-day carnival is much easier than depending on a coin laundry or paying hotel laundry rates.
- Recovery space. The pool, the BBQ area and the grassed area mean a place to chill between games or matches without paying for a venue.
Studios and motel rooms still work fine for individual delegates and supporting parents who’d rather have their own space.
Booking lead times — honest guidance
From the front desk:
- State titles + state-level rep weekends: family-apartment sizes (2–4 bedroom) usually gone 6–12 weeks out. Single rooms last a little longer.
- Regional carnivals + association fixtures: typically bookable 3–6 weeks ahead. Tighter if your dates clash with school holidays.
- Smoked Rockhampton — 5–6 February 2027: barbecue and craft-beer festival. Pulls a heavy out-of-town crowd; carnivals on the same weekend will share stock — book by November 2026.
- Rockynats — 2–4 April 2027 (Easter weekend): motorsport / car-culture event that sells the city out across the long weekend. Book by January 2027 if you're in town for any reason on those dates.
- Beef Australia — 2–8 May 2027: city-wide sell-out for a week. Carnivals scheduled in early May 2027 will share stock with Beef visitors — book the moment your fixture is confirmed.
- Anything in May: clashing with Beef Australia or pre-Beef trade builds — book early irrespective of the carnival.
- Anything during the Rocky Show week (June): same — book early.
- September to November — ASMTI (defence): the Australia – Singapore Military Training Initiative runs each year across these months. It's the longest sustained accommodation squeeze of the calendar; spring/early-summer carnivals get tight alongside it. Book the same week your fixture is confirmed.
- School holidays (Easter, June–July, September): family-apartment sizes tighten well before the holiday starts — carnivals over those windows go early.
For a recurring team booking (the same carnival every year), we’ll happily put you in a 12-month-ahead hold so you don’t need to scramble each year.
Which rooms suit a carnival weekend
A family following one competitor fits a 2 Bedroom Townhouse — two bathrooms, kitchen and laundry downstairs, direct pool access for the hour after a game. Two families travelling together, or a team billeting together, take a 3 Bedroom Apartment or the 4 Bedroom Riverfront Apartment. The in-room laundry is the part people are most grateful for by day three. Compare all nine on the accommodation page.
