Rockhampton vs Bundaberg Road Trip Planning
Rockhampton and Bundaberg are both Bruce Highway cities separated by approximately 330 kilometres. On a Queensland road trip, both are potential multi-day stops, and choosing how to allocate time depends on your interests and the season.
Rockhampton's Offer
The Capricorn Coast with Great Keppel Island and Yeppoon. Capricorn Caves. Free zoo and botanic gardens. Heritage character along Quay Street and the Fitzroy River. Beef capital dining. A genuine working city with full services and variety.
Bundaberg's Offer
Mon Repos turtle encounters during nesting season from November to March, one of Australia's great wildlife experiences. Bundaberg Rum Distillery tour and tasting. Lady Musgrave Island and Lady Elliot Island reef access. Bargara Beach coastal lifestyle. Agricultural region with sugarcane, macadamias, and produce trails. Craft breweries.
Road Trip Allocation
Heading north from Brisbane, Bundaberg is the logical first stop at approximately 360 kilometres. Allow two to three days for turtles if visiting during nesting season, the rum distillery, and a reef day trip. Continue to Rockhampton, four hours further, for two to three days covering city attractions, the coast, and Great Keppel Island. Both cities deserve more than an overnight stop. If you must choose one, Bundaberg wins during turtle season. Outside turtle season, Rockhampton offers more variety and the Capricorn Coast is the stronger coastal experience.
