Rockhampton to Mackay Drive

The drive from Rockhampton to Mackay covers approximately 340 kilometres along the Bruce Highway and takes around four hours in normal conditions. This stretch of highway passes through some of the most sparsely settled sections of Queensland's east coast, with long distances between towns and limited services in several sections. Understanding what to expect on this drive is important for safe and comfortable travel.

Route Overview

From Rockhampton, head north on the Bruce Highway, crossing the Fitzroy River. The first significant settlement is Marlborough, approximately 100 kilometres north. Beyond Marlborough, the highway passes through St Lawrence and Clairview, small settlements with very limited services. The country is flat to gently rolling, predominantly cattle stations with eucalyptus woodland. Sarina, the southern gateway to the Mackay region, sits approximately 290 kilometres from Rockhampton. From Sarina to Mackay is another 40 kilometres of sugarcane country.

Critical Planning: Fuel and Services

Fill up in Rockhampton before departure. Marlborough has fuel and basic food but hours can be limited. Between Marlborough and Sarina, approximately 190 kilometres, services are minimal. St Lawrence has a pub and basic supplies. Clairview has a caravan park and takeaway. Neither can be relied upon for fuel outside standard business hours. This is the section that catches unprepared drivers. Carry water and snacks in the car, and do not leave Rockhampton or Marlborough with less than half a tank of fuel.

Mobile Coverage

Mobile phone coverage on Telstra is generally maintained along the highway corridor, though signal strength varies. Optus and Vodafone coverage is unreliable between Marlborough and Sarina, with significant gaps. Download offline maps before leaving Rockhampton if you are relying on phone navigation. A paper map as backup is practical rather than old-fashioned on this stretch of highway.

Wildlife and Road Hazards

Kangaroos and cattle are present along the roadside through this section. The pastoral properties that border the highway mean cattle may be on or near the road, particularly in sections without roadside fencing. Road trains use this highway extensively. Overtaking a road train requires a long stretch of clear road and should only be attempted on designated overtaking lanes or where visibility is excellent. Fatigue is a genuine risk on the flat, monotonous sections north of Marlborough. Use rest areas, take breaks every two hours, and do not push on if tired.

Arriving in Mackay

Mackay is a full-service city with a population of approximately 80,000. It sits in the heart of sugarcane country, and the surrounding fields of cane create a distinctive tropical landscape. The city has good dining, accommodation, and services, and functions as the gateway to both the Whitsundays and the inland mining country around Moranbah and Dysart. After the sparse sections of the Bruce Highway, arriving in Mackay feels like returning to civilisation.
