Rockhampton FAQ

Practical answers to the questions most commonly asked by visitors to Rockhampton, covering climate, getting around, attractions, and the things that guidebooks either skip or get wrong.

How hot does Rockhampton get?

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 35 degrees Celsius and occasionally push past 40. The humidity in the wet season from December through March makes the heat feel more oppressive than the numbers suggest. Winter days are typically 22-26 degrees with low humidity and are genuinely pleasant. The most comfortable months to visit are May through September.

Is Rockhampton worth stopping for, or should I drive straight through?

Rockhampton is worth at least an overnight stop and ideally two or three days. The free zoo is surprisingly good, the Capricorn Caves are genuinely interesting, and the Capricorn Coast with Yeppoon and Great Keppel Island is beautiful. Driving straight through means missing one of the more rewarding stops on the Bruce Highway. The steak alone justifies stopping for dinner.

How far is the beach from Rockhampton?

Yeppoon, the main beach on the Capricorn Coast, is approximately 35 minutes east of central Rockhampton by car. Emu Park is about the same distance via a different route. The drive is straightforward on a well-maintained road. You can easily base yourself in Rockhampton and visit the coast as a day trip.

Can I swim at the beach year-round?

Beach swimming on the Capricorn Coast is not recommended from October through April due to marine stingers including box jellyfish. The Yeppoon Lagoon, a free public swimming pool on the foreshore, provides stinger-free swimming year-round. During the stinger-free months from May through September, beach swimming is safe and the water temperature is pleasant.

What is the best way to get to Great Keppel Island?

Take the ferry from the Keppel Bay Marina at Yeppoon. The crossing takes approximately 30 minutes. Ferry services run daily with morning departures and afternoon returns. Book in advance during school holidays and peak season as capacity is limited. The marina is about 10 minutes south of Yeppoon town centre.

Is Rockhampton safe?

Rockhampton is a typical regional Australian city in terms of safety. Normal precautions apply: lock your vehicle, do not leave valuables visible, and be aware of your surroundings at night in less-frequented areas. The city centre, accommodation areas, and tourist attractions are safe for visitors. If anything, the biggest safety concern for visitors is wildlife on the roads, particularly kangaroos at dawn and dusk.

How long should I spend in Rockhampton?

One day covers the main city attractions. Two days allows a day in Rockhampton and a day on the Capricorn Coast or at Great Keppel Island. Three days is the sweet spot, giving you enough time to see everything without rushing. A week is comfortable if you want to explore the coast thoroughly, visit the Byfield area, and take day trips to surrounding attractions at a relaxed pace.

Where should I eat steak in Rockhampton?

The riverside restaurants on Quay Street are the most atmospheric option. Several pubs and bistros across the city also serve excellent steaks at more modest prices. Even the mid-range options in Rockhampton serve quality beef that reflects the city's cattle industry heritage. Ask locals for current recommendations, as restaurant quality can shift with chef changes and ownership.

Is there Uber or public transport?

Ride-share services operate in Rockhampton but availability can be limited, particularly at night and in outer suburbs. Taxis are available. Public transport exists via Sunbus, but services are infrequent by capital city standards. For most visitors, having your own vehicle is strongly recommended, particularly for accessing the Capricorn Coast, the caves, and attractions outside the CBD.

What mobile phone coverage is like?

Telstra provides the best coverage in Rockhampton and the surrounding region. Optus is reliable in the city but drops off more quickly outside urban areas. Vodafone coverage is adequate in the city but limited in regional areas. If you are heading west on the Capricorn Highway or north on the Bruce Highway beyond Marlborough, Telstra is the only network that provides consistent coverage.

Can I do a day trip to the Gemfields from Rockhampton?

The Gemfields at Sapphire and Rubyvale are approximately 300 kilometres west of Rockhampton via the Capricorn Highway through Emerald, a drive of around three and a half hours each way. A day trip is technically possible but would involve seven hours of driving, leaving very limited time at the Gemfields. A better approach is to include the Gemfields as part of a wider itinerary with an overnight stay in Emerald.
