Rockhampton Airport Guide

Rockhampton Airport is a compact regional airport approximately 5 kilometres south of the CBD. It handles regular domestic flights and serves as a key FIFO hub for Bowen Basin mine workers. The airport is functional and efficient, getting you from plane to city quickly.

Airlines and Routes

Qantas and Virgin Australia operate regular services between Rockhampton and Brisbane, with multiple flights daily. Flight time is approximately 90 minutes. Additional routes may operate seasonally. FIFO charter operations add to traffic, with charter flights connecting to Bowen Basin mine sites.

Getting to and from the Airport

The airport is a 10-minute drive from the CBD and most central accommodation. Taxis are available at the terminal. Ride-share services operate but availability varies. No regular bus service runs to the airport. Most visitors drive and use the car park, arrange accommodation transfers, or take a taxi. Rental car companies operate desks at the terminal.

Facilities and Parking

The terminal has a small cafe, gift shop, and basic seating. WiFi is available. Arrive one hour before domestic flights. Short-term and long-term parking are available at reasonable rates, significantly cheaper than capital city airports. For FIFO workers, long-term parking costs are manageable, and several nearby properties offer secure parking with airport transfer arrangements.

For FIFO Workers

The airport handles early-morning and late-afternoon peaks associated with roster changeovers. Accommodation within 10-15 minutes on the southern side of Rockhampton caters specifically to FIFO workers with early check-out flexibility, packed breakfast options, and secure parking for vehicles left during rosters.
