One Week Central Queensland Itinerary
A full week based in Rockhampton gives you time to explore the city, the Capricorn Coast, and the broader Central Queensland region at a pace that feels like a genuine holiday rather than a sightseeing sprint. This itinerary uses Rockhampton as a home base, with day trips that radiate outward to the coast, the islands, and surrounding attractions. It works for families, couples, and solo travellers, with notes on adjustments where relevant.
Days One and Two: Rockhampton City and Surrounds
Day one covers the city essentials: the free Rockhampton Zoo and Botanic Gardens in the morning, Quay Street heritage walk before lunch, East Street for food, and the Capricorn Caves in the afternoon. Day two adds the Dreamtime Cultural Centre for a guided Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural experience in the morning, Kershaw Gardens for a relaxed midday, and the Mount Etna bat caves area for the late afternoon bat emergence at dusk. Dinner both evenings at different restaurants on Quay Street or East Street. Two days gives you a thorough understanding of the city and its immediate surrounds.
Days Three and Four: Capricorn Coast
Day three is the Great Keppel Island day trip. Early departure to the Keppel Bay Marina, morning ferry, full day on the island swimming and snorkelling at multiple beaches, afternoon return. Stop in Yeppoon for the lagoon before driving back to Rocky. Day four explores the southern coast: drive to Emu Park for morning beach time and the Singing Ship, then north to Yeppoon for lunch and a relaxed afternoon at the foreshore. This spreads the coast across two days rather than trying to compress everything into one exhausting outing.
Days Five and Six: Extended Exploration
Day five offers options depending on your interests. Active visitors should head to Byfield National Park for bushwalking, freshwater swimming, and birdwatching in genuine wilderness. Alternatively, return to Great Keppel Island for a second day to explore the more remote beaches you missed on the first visit, or book an adventure caving tour at the Capricorn Caves. Day six is a rest and exploration day: revisit favourite spots, explore the Rockhampton shops, find a new cafe, or simply spend the day at the pool with a book. Not every day needs to be packed with activity.
Day Seven: Departure
Use the final morning for any remaining interests or a return visit to the zoo or gardens. Pack and check out. If heading north on the Bruce Highway, fuel up in Rockhampton and plan your next stop. If heading west on the Capricorn Highway towards Emerald and the Gemfields, you are beginning an entirely different Central Queensland experience.
Seasonal Notes
This itinerary is most pleasant from May through September. In summer, adjust activity times to avoid the peak heat from noon to 3pm. Swap ocean swimming for the Yeppoon Lagoon during stinger season. The caves and cultural centre work year-round regardless of weather.
