Five Day Rockhampton and Region Itinerary
Five days in the Rockhampton region gives you time to explore the city, spend proper time on the Capricorn Coast, visit the islands, and experience the attractions that most visitors miss because they are only passing through for a night. This itinerary balances activity with relaxation and covers the genuine highlights without trying to fill every hour.
Day One: Rockhampton City
Morning at the Rockhampton Zoo and Botanic Gardens, arriving around 8:30am. The zoo is free and fills two to three hours comfortably. Late morning, walk Quay Street along the Fitzroy River for the heritage buildings and interpretive signage. Lunch on East Street at one of the cafes that have lifted Rockhampton's food scene. Afternoon, drive to the Capricorn Caves for the Cathedral Cave tour. Return for a swim at the motel pool and dinner at a Quay Street riverside restaurant. Order steak.
Day Two: Great Keppel Island
Leave early for the Keppel Bay Marina via Yeppoon. Take the morning ferry to Great Keppel Island. Spend the day swimming, snorkelling, and walking between beaches. Fisherman's Beach for arrival, Shelving Beach for snorkelling, Monkey Beach for seclusion. Bring food, water, and snorkelling gear. Return on the afternoon ferry. Stop in Yeppoon for the lagoon and a casual dinner before driving back to Rockhampton.
Day Three: Southern Coast and Culture
Morning at the Dreamtime Cultural Centre for the guided Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural tour, approximately 90 minutes. Drive to Emu Park for lunch and an afternoon on the beach. Walk the headland to the Singing Ship. Stay for sunset if the timing works, then return to Rockhampton for dinner. This day combines cultural depth with coastal relaxation.
Day Four: Adventure or Relaxation
Option A for the adventurous: drive to Byfield National Park north of Yeppoon for bushwalking, freshwater swimming, and birdwatching in genuine wilderness. Allow a full day and bring everything you need. Option B for relaxation: return to Yeppoon for a morning at the lagoon and foreshore, followed by lunch and an afternoon exploring the Yeppoon shops and cafes. Option C: book an adventure tour at the Capricorn Caves for a more physical caving experience than the standard walking tour.
Day Five: Departure Day Exploration
Spend the morning at Kershaw Gardens in North Rockhampton. The themed gardens, Japanese garden, and playground provide a pleasant final morning. Pick up any local produce or souvenirs from the shops on East Street. If departing on the Bruce Highway heading north, the Capricorn Caves are on the way and a second visit, perhaps the adventure tour if you did the standard tour on Day One, is a possibility. If heading south, fill up with fuel in Rockhampton and plan your next stop at Gladstone, approximately 75 minutes away.
Seasonal Adjustments
In summer, prioritise morning activities and retreat to air conditioning or the pool during the peak heat from noon to 3pm. Swap beach swimming for lagoon swimming during stinger season. In winter, the timing works more easily with comfortable conditions throughout the day. The island day trip works year-round but is most pleasant from May through September when stingers are absent and the weather is reliably clear.
